Formentera Island

Formentera is the smallest of Spain’s Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s known for its clear waters and long stretches of beach backed by dunes and pine trees. A popular day-trip destination in the summertime, it’s reachable by ferry from its more crowded, better known island neighbor, Ibiza. Pastimes include snorkeling and sailing, with equipment rentals and boat charters available.

3 Lighthouses in Formentera Island

final light house

  • The lighthouse atLa Mola is the oldest and most important. The island’s highest lighthouse, it was built on a 120-metre-high cliff, Enjoying the sunrises and sunsets from this point is an unforgettable
  • Es Cap de Barbaría is another magical point on the island, where the lighthouse illuminates the horizon with its beam of light over the rocks and cliffs. A watchtower that used to protect the island from invaders stands a short distance from the lighthouse.
  • The third lighthouse is  located in the port of La Savina, the only port on the island where strolls can be taken to admire the boats moored there. Two very striking itineraries begin at the port: one that follows the coast, from which the islands’ finest beaches can be admired, and another route inland on foot through the nature zone of S’Estany Pudent[spacer height=”20px”]

La Mola Hippy Market

Every Wednesday and Sunday, from 4pm until 9.30pm, Formentera pays homage to its bohemian heritage at the famous hippy market in La Mola. Think tie-dyed clothing, handmade ceramics, colourful accessories, art, jewellery and much more, complete with live music to make your hippy shopping experience complete… All objects on sale have been made or worked on the island. A great spot to shop for souvenirs to bring back home.

Estany des Peix

Estany des Peix in northern Formentera is a saltwater lagoon with a narrow neck connected to the sea that allows small boats to enter and anchor there. The calm, shallow waters make it ideal for water sports, and it is a great place to try out kayaking, windsurfing or sailing. This natural area has stretches of beach where visitors can swim and watch the sunsets. The coast is characterized by the very long area with small coves, a relaxed atmosphere (the beach is not too crowded by local visitors)

  1.  Levante is ideal for naturists and those who like to enjoy seclusion as it comprises quiet bays and long stretches of golden sand with the soft backdrop of dunes bordering the Salinas and Estany Pudent.  It is possible to walk from Es Pujols all the way along the coastline to reach the top of this beach.
  2. Platja de ses Illetes This beautiful virgin and wonderful beach is characterized by the fact of not being very big, it has fine-grained white sand, very gentle slope (at 50 metres from the beach there is a depth of 1,5 metres) and the orientation is toward west. It is one of the most frequented beaches of the beautiful Formentera.
The accessibility by car is easy following the signs and the deviations. The private car, moped or bicycle can be left on a free parking area in the surroundings. You can also reach this beach with the public transport. The nearest bus stop is located at half a kilometre.
  3. Mitjorn beach Along the south coast of the island, Migjorn combines long sandy beaches with wild and rocky spots of bright green water, ideal for the lonely and nudists that prefer to be accompanied by a good book. In both cases, it is a great option if you travel with kids as it doesn’t get deep enough for swimming until you are far from the shore. Along the beach you will find great “chiringuitos” such as: Blue Bar (good food and good music).

Other Beaches try cola Saona (Carved into a cliff) and Es Caló (tiny fisherman’s town with wonderful micro beaches a couple hundred meters to the west).[spacer height=”20px”]
